FOMCW Executive Director
Diane Burgis was awarded the
"Watershed Champion Award"
The Contra Costa Watershed Forum (CCWF) Watershed Champion Award
honors a person who has worked to build partnerships and provides leadership in
protecting, restoring or enhancing creeks and watersheds. He or she is
recognized for inspiring others to work collaboratively toward addressing
conservation issues in Contra Costa County. Diane was recognized by the CCWF
for her efforts on behalf of Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed. Past awardees
inlcude Mitch Avalon (Contra Costa County Deputy Director of Public Works-
Flood Control), Whitney Dotson (Board Member of East Bay Regional Park
District Ward 1) and Rona Zollinger (founder and director of the Environmental
Studies Academy at the Briones School in Martinez). Brian Curran, FOMCW
Board Chairperson said, “The partnerships [Diane] has built over the years have
proved invaluable not only to the success of the FOMCW but have become the
nexus for much wider conservation projects with affiliated organizations. She
seems to possess boundless energy that drives her to continually strive for the
next challenge. The passion she shows for her work goes far beyond the
requirements of her position. Diane truly cares about the environment and strives
every day to make a difference and to inspire others to do the same”“

Brian Curran awarded "Creek Monitoring
Program Volunteer of the Year for East
County
FOMCW Board President and Monitoring Chairperson Brian Curran was honored
with an award given to exemplary participants in the CCWF’s Creek Monitoring
Program. Brian has helped lead efforts to develop a Citizen Monitoring Program
for FOMCW. Brian was honored with this award four years ago as well. “Even with
a full time job and a family, Brian spends hours of his time volunteering on the
creek netting benthic macroinvertebrates, recording GPS points, sampling water
quality, searching for salmon, and maintaining the Marsh Creek fish ladder. Brian’
s sincere commitment to science has greatly improved the quality of the Friends
of Marsh Creek Watershed’s monitoring program and helped improve and
increase awareness about the Marsh Creek watershed.”, said Sarah Puckett,
Senior Restoration Ecologist with the Natural Heritage Institute, a FOMCW
partner.

The Friends of Marsh Creek
Watershed
(FOMCW) work to raise
awareness in the community about
the value of Marsh Creek and its
watershed. The members of
FOMCW bring diverse backgrounds,
interests and expertise to help
protect, preserve and celebrate the
wonderful natural features of our
community.
FOMCW is active throughout the
community. We have established
native gardens and cleanups. We
participate in and conduct
monitoring programs. We serve on
advisory committees and provide
input to city, county, state and
federal agencies. We support
education in the schools and
provide opportunities for all in the
community to learn more about the
local watershed. We continue to
look for other opportunities to
reach out to the community and
invite YOU to
join us!
